Network Support for Chicago Businesses Whose Networks Grew Without a Plan
Most business networks were never designed as a complete system. They grew: a router installed when the office opened, switches added as headcount went up, WiFi access points placed wherever someone thought coverage seemed thin, VPN configured by the last IT company and never documented. The result is a network that works until it doesn’t, and when it doesn’t, nobody can explain why.
Datastrive provides network support and infrastructure management for Chicago businesses that need their network to be reliable and understood by someone. We design, manage, and support business networks, and we handle the two most common children of network problems: server and endpoint management, and remote monitoring.
- Chicago-based team supporting businesses across Cook, DuPage, Lake and Will counties
- Vendor-neutral: we recommend based on what your environment needs, not on vendor relationships
- Network support available as part of a full IT services agreement or scoped separately
- Security built around the CIS Controls v8.1 framework and handled through our cybersecurity services

Why Business Networks Break Down Over Time
Understanding the common failure patterns makes it easier to explain what good network support actually addresses.
The Network Was Never Documented
Unlabeled cables, no rack diagram, switches added without a record of what’s plugged into what. When something fails, troubleshooting starts with physically following cable runs rather than reading a network diagram. Documentation is not a nice-to-have. It’s what makes every future change and every future problem faster to deal with.
WiFi Was Placed, Not Designed
Access points get mounted where someone thought the signal would reach. Without a proper wireless survey, coverage is uneven, bandwidth is inconsistent in high-density areas, and roaming between access points causes drops. The internet gets blamed for a problem that is actually in the wireless design.
Switches and Devices Accumulated Past End of Life
A Layer 2 network built ad-hoc over time tends to accumulate older switches running firmware that hasn’t been updated, running configurations that don’t reflect how the network is actually being used. End-of-life equipment can’t be patched and can’t support modern security controls.
The Network Is Flat
A flat network with no segmentation means one compromised device has a path to everything else: servers, financial data, production systems. VLAN segmentation limits that radius, separating workstations from servers from IoT devices from guest WiFi. This is a basic control in the CIS framework and one of the most commonly skipped in SMB environments.
Multi-Site and Remote Access Were Set Up Once and Left
Site-to-site VPN and remote access configurations were usually set up when needed and not revisited. Changes in the environment, credential rotation, split tunneling decisions, and performance problems accumulate without anyone reviewing them.
Nobody Is Watching the Network Itself
Most businesses have no visibility into network health: switch port errors, link utilization, equipment temperature, unusual traffic patterns. Problems get reported by employees as slow computers or internet issues rather than caught at the network level first.
What Our Network Support Covers in Chicago
Network Assessment and Documentation
Before recommending anything, we need to know what you have. A network assessment audits your current infrastructure: what equipment is in place, how it’s configured, what’s at or past end of life, where segmentation is missing, and where the documentation gaps are. Most network support engagements start here. Some businesses only need the assessment and a prioritized remediation plan. We’ll tell you which category you’re in.
Network Design and Rebuilds
For businesses opening a new office, relocating, or dealing with a network that has accumulated enough problems to warrant starting over, we plan and build business networks that are documented, segmented, and sized for where the business is going rather than where it is today. Equipment recommendations are based on your requirements and budget. We work with Cisco Meraki, Aruba, Ubiquiti, Fortinet, SonicWall and other major business networking vendors and recommend based on fit, not margin.
Business WiFi and Wireless Surveys
Wireless design is a separate discipline from network design generally. A predictive survey uses floor plan data to model access point placement before anything goes on the wall. An on-site survey with a dedicated test unit validates real-world performance in the existing space and catches dead zones and interference that modeling misses. We handle WiFi surveys, access point selection, deployment and ongoing wireless management for Chicago offices.
Remote Access and VPN
If your team works from home, travels, or connects between office locations, remote access needs to be planned as part of the network rather than configured as an afterthought. We design and manage site-to-site VPN for multi-location businesses and remote access VPN for distributed teams, with appropriate split tunneling, access controls and authentication requirements. Remote access that was set up years ago and never revisited is one of the more common security gaps we find in network assessments.
Network Security and Segmentation
VLAN configuration, firewall integration and network access controls are handled as part of network design and management engagements. Deeper cybersecurity work, including managed firewall services and ongoing security monitoring, is managed through our cybersecurity services. The two are connected and we coordinate them, but they are scoped and managed separately so there’s no ambiguity about what’s covered where.
ISP and Circuit Coordination
Network support that stops at the edge of your equipment is incomplete. We work with Comcast Business, AT&T, and other Chicagoland carriers to specify, order and coordinate internet circuits as part of network projects and through our IT vendor management service. When your ISP needs to be changed, upgraded or held accountable for a performance problem, we handle that conversation.
Which Network Support Does Your Business Need?
Not every business needs a rebuild, and not every problem is where it first appears. Here is how we usually think about it in an early conversation:
Server and Endpoint Management
The network carries the traffic. Servers and endpoints generate it and depend on it. Both need to be maintained together, which is why server and endpoint management sits under this area of our IT services.
Server and endpoint management covers the devices connected to your network: servers, desktops, laptops, and workstations. Patching, configuration, lifecycle tracking and hardware decisions all happen here. A network that is performing well with servers and endpoints that are behind on patches or running failing hardware does not produce a stable environment for your team.

- Lifecycle tracking
- Hardware decisions
Remote Monitoring and Management
Network and infrastructure problems are easier to address before they cause a full outage than after. Remote monitoring and management gives our team visibility into your environment: switch health, server performance, device status and alert conditions that indicate something needs attention.
The scope of what gets monitored, and what the response process looks like when something is flagged, is defined clearly at the start of every engagement. Monitoring is only useful if it is tied to a response process, and we make sure those expectations are explicit rather than assumed.

- Server performance
- Device status
- Alert conditions that indicate something needs attention
Network Support and the Broader IT Picture
A network does not exist in isolation. It connects to servers and endpoints we manage through server and endpoint management. It carries traffic to and from cloud platforms managed through our cloud services. It is protected at the perimeter and at the endpoint through our cybersecurity services. And the decisions about how it evolves over time are shaped by IT consulting and vCIO work.
We handle all of these, which means the team managing your network understands what it connects to. That matters when a problem crosses a boundary between the network layer and a server, a cloud platform, or a security tool.
How Network Support Is Priced
Network support can sit inside an ongoing IT services agreement or be scoped as a standalone project, and an assessment is usually the first step either way. What it costs depends on the size of your environment, how many sites you run and how much of it you want us to manage. Our managed IT services pricing guide explains how agreements are structured and what moves the number.
Network Support for Chicago Industries
Different industries have different network requirements. Some of what we see regularly:
Law firms need reliable, controlled access to document management systems and case files, with network segmentation that keeps client data separate from general office traffic. Healthcare practices run clinical applications that have specific network requirements and need reliable access during patient care hours. Manufacturers often have separate production and office networks that need to coexist without either creating problems for the other. Professional services firms that work across multiple locations need multi-site connectivity that holds up reliably. Nonprofits often have distributed staff and need remote access that works without requiring technical sophistication from the person at home.
See the industries we support for the full list, including legal, healthcare, manufacturing, financial services and nonprofits.

Frequently Asked Questions About Network Support in Chicago
What does network support include?
Network support covers the design, configuration, management and ongoing maintenance of your business network: the switches, routers, firewalls, wireless access points and cabling that your team’s devices connect to. It also covers remote access and VPN, multi-site connectivity, documentation and monitoring of network health. The specific scope depends on what your environment needs.
Can you take over a network that was set up by a previous IT company?
Yes, and most engagements start that way. We assess and document what’s already in place, identify what’s working, flag what’s at end of life or misconfigured, and propose remediation in priority order. A full rebuild is sometimes the right answer and sometimes not. We’ll be direct about which one applies.
Do you do wireless surveys before installing WiFi?
Yes. For new spaces we use predictive surveys based on floor plan data. For existing offices we use an on-site test unit to measure real-world performance before committing to access point placement. Both approaches are more reliable than placing hardware based on guesswork.
What network equipment vendors do you work with?
We work with Cisco Meraki, Aruba, Ubiquiti, Fortinet, SonicWall and other business-grade networking vendors. We recommend based on what fits your environment and budget, not on vendor relationships. If you already have equipment from a specific vendor and it’s performing well, we manage it rather than replace it.
Can you help with VPN and remote access for a distributed team?
Yes. Remote access VPN for individual users and site-to-site VPN for multi-location businesses are both part of our network infrastructure work. If your remote access setup was configured some time ago and hasn’t been reviewed since, we’d typically include that in an initial network assessment.
What is VLAN segmentation and does my business need it?
A VLAN divides a physical network into logical segments, so that devices in one segment can’t freely communicate with devices in another. In practice, this means your employee workstations, servers, WiFi and guest network are on separate segments, limiting how far a problem or a compromise on one device can spread. The CIS Controls framework treats segmentation as a foundational control. Most small business networks we inherit don’t have it in place.
Does network support include server and endpoint management?
Those are managed separately but are part of the same service area. See server and endpoint management for what’s covered there, and remote monitoring and management for how we maintain visibility into the environment.
How do existing partners contact you about a network issue?
Through the client portal at portal.datastrive.com, by email at [email protected] or by phone at (773) 863-3868. All support routes through shared channels so every issue is logged, tracked and handled by the whole team.
