How RMM Works

Most IT Issues Have Warning Signs Before They Become Outages

Disk filling up, memory leaks, certificate expirations, failed backups, antivirus disabled — every outage has a precursor. RMM catches them.

Reactive IT only sees the outage

Without monitoring, IT learns about problems from user tickets. By then it’s already business impact.

Manual patching gets skipped

Without automation, patches get postponed. Postponed patches become unpatched vulnerabilities. Unpatched vulnerabilities become breaches.

Disk-full surprises kill servers

Logs filling up, databases growing, backup failures eating space — all preventable with proactive monitoring of capacity trends.

Certificate expirations cause outages

Forgotten SSL/TLS certs expire silently and break websites, email, and VPN. Monitoring catches expiration well before deadline.

Failed backups go unnoticed

A backup that fails Friday night and isn’t noticed until Monday morning is just hope. RMM catches failures the moment they happen.

Security drift is invisible without monitoring

Antivirus disabled, EDR uninstalled, firewall rules changed — security drift happens. RMM detects and alerts on configuration changes.

What We Monitor

Comprehensive Monitoring Across Your IT Environment

Six core capabilities — what we monitor, what we automate, and what reporting we provide.

Servers & Workloads

Physical and virtual servers, services, processes, capacity trends, and performance baselines — alerted on deviation from normal.

Learn more →

Workstations & Endpoints

Workstation health, security posture, application performance, and user-reported slowness correlated with system metrics.

Learn more →

Networks & Connectivity

Switches, firewalls, ISP circuits, internal links, and VPN tunnels. Network outages detected at the source, not by user complaints.

Learn more →

Patching & Updates

Automated patch deployment for Windows, macOS, and third-party applications. Tested in staging, deployed in maintenance windows.

Learn more →

Automated Remediation

Common issues (services restarting, disk cleanup, log rotation) automated. Less time on routine tickets, more on real work.

Reporting & Trending

Monthly executive reports plus weekly operational dashboards. Visibility into uptime, performance, security posture, and trends.

Why Datastrive

One Hire vs. an Entire Bench.

Hiring a single in-house IT person costs roughly the same as a full Datastrive managed support agreement — but a single person can’t cover 24/7, can’t be a senior network engineer and a cybersecurity specialist and a vCIO at the same time, and goes on vacation. Managed IT support gives you depth, redundancy, and predictable cost without the recruiting risk.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about RMM, what gets monitored, and how managed monitoring fits with managed IT.

What does RMM stand for?
Remote Monitoring and Management. The category of tooling and services that watch IT environments continuously, deploy patches, and resolve common issues automatically.
Is RMM the same as managed IT support?
No — RMM is one component of managed IT. Managed IT bundles RMM, helpdesk, cybersecurity, backup, and vCIO strategy. RMM standalone is the monitoring/patching layer without the helpdesk and strategic services.
How does patching work without breaking things?
Patches are tested in a staging environment, deployed during maintenance windows (typically overnight or weekend), with reboot coordination and rollback plans. Aggressive patching with safety controls.
What does RMM cost?
Per-device per month. Bundled into managed IT or available standalone. Most clients combine RMM with managed IT for the full operational coverage.
Can RMM replace having an internal IT person?
For some businesses, yes. Most pair RMM (the tooling layer) with managed IT (the people layer) — see our outsourced IT page for fully outsourced engagements that include both.
How do alerts get to us?
Critical alerts go to our 24/7 monitoring team for triage and response — most are resolved without contacting you. Alerts that need your input or business decisions get escalated to your team via the contact methods we agree on.
