Why Backup & DR Matters

Most Backup Setups Fail When You Actually Need Them

Untested backups, unrealistic RTOs, and missing M365 protection are the rule, not the exception. The time to discover this is not after a ransomware attack.

Untested backups fail when you need them

Backups that haven’t been restored aren’t backups — they’re hope. Quarterly tested restores are the only validation that matters.

Ransomware encrypts backups too

Standard network-attached backups get encrypted alongside production data. Immutable, air-gapped backups are the only ransomware-resistant option.

M365 isn’t backed up by Microsoft

Microsoft replicates data within their infrastructure but doesn’t restore deleted Exchange items, SharePoint files, or OneDrive content beyond their retention windows.

Recovery time objectives are usually fiction

Most businesses have unrealistic RTO assumptions. "Back up and running in a few hours" usually means days when something actually fails.

No documented DR runbook

When disaster strikes, who does what in what order? Without a documented runbook, recovery becomes ad-hoc panic.

Cyber insurance now requires backup proof

Insurers want documented backup configurations, restore tests, and immutable storage. No proof = no payout.

What’s Included

Comprehensive Backup & Disaster Recovery

Six capabilities covering data, applications, recovery testing, and the documentation that makes recovery actually work.

Server & Workstation Backup

Image-based backups of physical and virtual servers, plus workstation file backup. Daily, with retention sized to compliance and operational requirements.

Microsoft 365 Backup

Exchange, SharePoint, OneDrive, and Teams backup with point-in-time restore. Microsoft doesn’t back up M365; we do.

Learn more →

Immutable / Ransomware-Resistant

Backups stored immutably (cannot be modified or deleted by ransomware) with offsite air-gap copies. The control insurers require.

Learn more →

Defined RTO & RPO

Recovery Time Objective and Recovery Point Objective documented per system, validated by testing. Realistic, not aspirational.

Learn more →

Quarterly Tested Restores

Documented restore tests every quarter. Real recovery against real backup data, with documented results for cyber insurance reviews.

DR Runbook & Documentation

Documented disaster recovery runbook — who does what, in what order, with what credentials. The first thing you need when disaster strikes.

Why Datastrive

One Hire vs. an Entire Bench.

Hiring a single in-house IT person costs roughly the same as a full Datastrive managed support agreement — but a single person can’t cover 24/7, can’t be a senior network engineer and a cybersecurity specialist and a vCIO at the same time, and goes on vacation. Managed IT support gives you depth, redundancy, and predictable cost without the recruiting risk.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about data backup, disaster recovery, and what business continuity actually requires.

Doesn’t Microsoft back up Microsoft 365 for us?
No. Microsoft replicates M365 data within their infrastructure for availability, but they don’t restore deleted items past their default retention windows (30-93 days). For real backup with longer retention and point-in-time restore, you need a third-party backup product. We deploy and manage that.
What does immutable backup actually mean?
Backup data that cannot be modified, encrypted, or deleted by ransomware — even with administrator credentials. Stored on storage that enforces write-once-read-many (WORM). Cyber insurance increasingly requires this.
How often should we test restores?
Quarterly is the baseline. Testing means actually restoring data to a sandbox environment and validating it works — not just running a backup verification job.
What’s the difference between RTO and RPO?
RTO = Recovery Time Objective (how long until you’re back up after disaster). RPO = Recovery Point Objective (how much data can you afford to lose). Both must be defined per system and validated by testing.
How long does it take to recover from ransomware?
Depends on the backup design. With immutable backups and tested DR runbook: hours to a day for most environments. Without: weeks, often with permanent data loss. The difference is preparation, not luck.
What does backup & DR cost?
Per-server, per-workstation, and per-mailbox per month, depending on data volume and retention. Bundled into managed IT support or available standalone. Quoted after a free backup assessment.
