Why Network Design Matters

Most Business Networks Were Never Designed — They Just Grew

Networks accumulate over years through equipment additions, office expansions, and quick fixes. The result: bottlenecks, security gaps, and reliability issues nobody can fully diagnose.

Wi-Fi dead zones and slow speeds

Without a proper wireless survey and AP design, coverage is uneven and bandwidth is inconsistent. Users blame the internet; the real problem is the network.

Switches stacked over years

Layer 2 networks built ad-hoc accumulate older switches at end-of-life, mismatched VLAN configurations, and bottlenecks at uplinks.

No segmentation = full breach radius

Flat networks let one compromised endpoint reach everything. Proper VLAN segmentation is fundamental security, not optional.

Multi-site connectivity is brittle

VPN tunnels and SD-WAN configurations need ongoing tuning. When they fail, everything from email to file shares stops.

Cabling that wasn’t labeled or documented

Unmarked patch cables, no rack documentation, no cabling map. When something fails, troubleshooting starts with "follow the wire."

No monitoring of the actual network

Network performance, switch health, link errors — most businesses have no visibility until users complain. Monitoring catches issues before that.

What’s Included

Design, Build, and Manage Business Networks

Six capabilities from initial network design through ongoing management — for new builds and existing-network takeovers alike.

Network Design & Build

Network architecture for new offices, major expansions, or rebuilds. Design that matches business growth, not just current needs.

Learn more →

Structured Cabling

Cat6 / Cat6A cabling, fiber runs, terminations, patch panels, racks. Done right the first time, properly labeled and documented.

Learn more →

Wireless Networks

Wi-Fi surveys, access point design, deployment, and management. Coverage and capacity matched to actual user density.

Learn more →

Network Security

VLAN segmentation, firewall integration, network access control, and intrusion detection. Security built in, not bolted on later.

Learn more →

Multi-Site & VPN

Site-to-site VPN, SD-WAN, and remote access for multi-location businesses. Reliable inter-office connectivity that doesn’t flap weekly.

Learn more →

Monitoring & Maintenance

Network monitoring, alerting, switch firmware management, and ongoing tuning. Issues detected before users notice.

Why Datastrive

One Hire vs. an Entire Bench.

Hiring a single in-house IT person costs roughly the same as a full Datastrive managed support agreement — but a single person can’t cover 24/7, can’t be a senior network engineer and a cybersecurity specialist and a vCIO at the same time, and goes on vacation. Managed IT support gives you depth, redundancy, and predictable cost without the recruiting risk.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about business network design, deployment, and ongoing management.

Do you handle the cabling or just the network design?
Both. Most engagements include design, equipment specification, vendor coordination for cabling, and configuration. We can manage cabling subcontractors directly or work alongside your existing low-voltage vendor.
Can you take over an existing network?
Yes. Most engagements start by inheriting and documenting existing networks. We audit, document, identify gaps, and quote remediation. Full redesign is optional, not required.
Do you do wireless surveys?
Yes. Predictive surveys (CAD-based design) for new spaces, AP-on-a-stick surveys for existing offices. Physical surveys catch real-world issues that planning tools miss.
What network equipment vendors do you support?
Cisco (Meraki, Catalyst), Aruba, Ubiquiti, Fortinet, SonicWall — most major business networking vendors. We recommend based on requirements, not commission relationships.
Do you handle ISP and circuit ordering?
Yes — included in vendor management. We work with Comcast Business, AT&T, Cogent, and other Chicago-area carriers to specify, order, and coordinate circuits.
What does network infrastructure cost?
Project work (design and build) is fixed-fee per scope. Ongoing management is per-device per month, included in managed IT or standalone. Quoted after a free network assessment.
