Co-Managed vs. Fully Managed

When You Don’t Need a Replacement — You Need Reinforcement

Co-managed IT works when your in-house team is good but stretched. Here’s where the friction usually shows up.

Your IT manager is wearing too many hats

Strategic projects keep getting pushed because every day is firefighting Tier 1 tickets and routine maintenance.

Coverage gaps when your IT staff is out

Vacations, sick days, and weekends leave your team without help when issues hit at the worst possible times.

Specialty work needs specialty expertise

Cybersecurity, cloud migration, compliance audits — your in-house team shouldn’t have to fake their way through unfamiliar territory.

Recruiting senior IT talent is brutal

Hiring a senior network or security engineer in Chicago is expensive and slow. Adding capacity through co-management is faster.

Your tools and licensing are unmanaged

RMM, EDR, backup, MDM — software stacks pile up without a strategy. We bring an integrated toolset and document the lot.

Documentation lives in someone’s head

When your IT lead leaves, what they know walks out the door. Co-managed engagements keep documentation external and audit-ready.

Why Datastrive

One Hire vs. an Entire Bench.

Hiring a single in-house IT person costs roughly the same as a full Datastrive managed support agreement — but a single person can’t cover 24/7, can’t be a senior network engineer and a cybersecurity specialist and a vCIO at the same time, and goes on vacation. Managed IT support gives you depth, redundancy, and predictable cost without the recruiting risk.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about co-managed IT services and how a hybrid engagement actually works in practice.

What is the difference between co-managed IT and fully outsourced IT?
Co-managed IT augments your in-house IT team — they retain control of strategy and decisions, you keep your team intact. Fully outsourced means we are your IT department. Co-managed is the right fit when you have IT staff but need depth, coverage, or specialty expertise. See our outsourced IT services page for the alternative model.
Can we keep using our current tools and stack?
Yes. Co-managed engagements often start by integrating with your existing RMM, ticketing, and security tools. Over time we may recommend consolidations where it makes financial or operational sense, but every recommendation comes with a justification — not a forced rip-and-replace.
Will Datastrive’s team have access to all our systems?
Only the access necessary to deliver agreed-upon services, with documented role-based permissions. We use a co-managed access model with audit logs your team controls, and access is reviewed quarterly.
How does ticketing work — separate systems or shared?
Most clients prefer a shared ticketing system so visibility is unified across your team and ours. We can either integrate with your existing platform (ServiceNow, Freshservice, Zendesk, etc.) or run on ours, with your team having full access either way.
What size companies typically use co-managed IT services?
Typically Chicago businesses with 1-3 internal IT staff supporting 50-500 employees. Below that, fully outsourced IT is usually a better fit. Above 500 employees, you may want a hybrid model with multiple specialty providers handling different domains.
What does co-managed IT cost?
Pricing is per-user or per-coverage-tier per month, plus optional project work billed separately. Typical engagements run between fully outsourced pricing and the loaded cost of a single senior hire, depending on scope. We quote a fixed-fee proposal after a free assessment.
